Writing is by far one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. Buried in mathematics for years, and avoiding any type of “writing” courses left me an aversion to writing, to such an extent that I would avoid it entirely. Writing – the very word conjures up sharp criticisms from teachers who demanded re-write after re-write, from a person who hated the pen, unless it was sketching diagrams or complex equations.

How fortunate we are to be born in these times, to have access to computers that make the editing and revision process, so much easier. How grateful I am to my mother who led me by the hand to the library before I could write my name. The world of reading has been instrumental in awaking my mind, and acquiring new skills. How lucky I am to have a sweetheart that was willing to proof read my myriad first stumblings towards writing – letters to the editor. Her patience, kindness, humour, correction, teachings, and direction regarding, my bumbling attempts to write coherent thoughts, laid a foundation of confidence. I would be remiss if I did not also express my heartfelt thanks to fellow colleague and published writer Matt Shaw. His ‘formula’ for writing revealed the missing blue print for larger writing projects.

At last, I find myself enjoying the writing process in spite of the hard word that it entails. I look forward over the years to writing many more articles and papers, to share experiences and thoughts with others. If you detect a note of pride in my writings and ramblings, that is okay. I am proud I am finally able to write an acceptable if not good essay or paper.
